Review: Naked Holidays NYC

EndTimes Productions, the people behind the excellent Knuckleball in this past summer’s FringeNYC, try their hand at holiday entertainment in Naked Holidays NYC: several short plays performed by an ensemble cast, linked thematically by Christmas, Hanukah, Kwanzaa, and the holiday season. The overall tone is satirical, and nearly all the short pieces at least aim for comedy; the target(s) are people and entertainment that take Christmas/Hanukah/Kwanzaa (Kwanzchrismakah?) too seriously and those people and entertainment’s overly sentimental tone.

Review: Shrek The Musical

I had a great time at Shrek the Musical. For sheer imagination and engagement—especially in terms of its production design, which is one of the finest I’ve ever seen for a Broadway musical—it can’t be beat. And if you’re looking for something fun and wholesome (in the best sense of that word) for the youngsters, Shrek is ideal.

Review: The Cripple of Inishmaan

There’s a great deal of humanity in Martin McDonagh’s The Cripple of Inishmaan, currently receiving a production courtesy of the Atlantic Theater Company and Ireland’s Druid Theatre Company. Humanity in a McDonagh play? How is that possible? It’s not really found in the play itself (which is a lesser work in McDonagh’s storied canon), but in the wrenching staging by Garry Hynes and the performances by the superb ensemble.

Review: A Light Lunch

A Light Lunch, now having its world premiere at the Flea Theatre, holds true to playwright A.R. Gurney’s usual style—charming, fun, and complex. Perhaps a bit too complex at times.

Review: Simon Green Sings Coward at Christmas: A Cabaret for Noel

In many ways, Simon Green Sings Coward at Christmas is the perfect show for those New Yorkers who are at odds with the holiday—due chiefly to its utter lack of Christmas songs. Not a one amongst the bunch and surprisingly fewer of the comedic songs than I had expected. Were it not for the fragrant Douglas pine at the side of the stage, one might not know it was Christmas time at all. But then again, it is hard to care about that as the show has one of the best attributes of the season—being a lovely gift to the audience, a simply packaged, high-quality gem of a Coward experience…and very affordable for the strength of performance you are getting.
